Mandee White, who worked as a substitute teacher for 11 years, joined the staff at Burgess Elementary in a full-time capacity in August 2021, and she capped her first year by being named Rockin’ Jump’s Teacher of the Month for April.
With the school coming a close, we caught up with the ISS teacher for a quick Q&A:
How long have you been at your current school?
I have always subbed at Burgess Elementary and loved every minute of it, so to have been given the opportunity to be a part of the staff starting this year has made me forever grateful.
What led you into teaching and what continues to motivate you?
I have always had a passion for the younger generations of the world and getting to make special bonds with them. Having two girls of my own and watching them grow up and become amazing women has truly shown me the importance and glamour around a childhood, and I want to be able to make that possible for everyone I can.
What was your reaction to winning the award?
When I heard I was not only being nominated … but also winning, I was completely shocked. While I always try to spread love as far as it will reach, I was stunned to know it was actually making a difference and my peers noticed.
What do you find most rewarding about being a teacher?
Having this job comes with many great opportunities and moments, and I have to say seeing each kid grow and learn new things is the reason I find this job so rewarding.
Have you ever been to Rockin’ Jump before?
I have been to Rockin’ Jump multiple times when my daughters were younger and each time we had an amazing time, so being able to relive those moments will be so much fun.
Outside of the classroom, what are some of your interests?
I love spending time with my family and going on trips. Any moment I am around my family, I am instantly a happy person!
