Ashley Duncan was born and raised in Myrtle Beach, knows the value of the area’s public school system, and for nearly a decade she has been helping educate the community’s next generation of students.
She grew up with several family members in the teaching profession and didn’t think it was a career path she wanted to pursue, until falling in love with the classroom during a teacher-cadet program. Now she has grown into one of Horry County’s most popular teachers and for her efforts she was named Rockin’ Jump’s Teacher of the Month in February.
Meet Ashley Duncan:
How long have you been a teacher?
I have been teaching for nine years. I was born and raised in Myrtle Beach and attended the school for kindergarten and first grade I now teach at (Myrtle Beach Elementary). Once a Seahawk always a Seahawk!
What led you into teaching and what continues to motivate you?
I knew I loved working with kids and originally wanted to go into physical therapy. I have many family members in the teaching profession and wanted to stay away from it. My senior year of high school I participated in the teacher cadet program and actually worked with a first grade class at MBECS (formerly known as MBP). I absolutely fell in love with teaching, working with kids, and felt the calling in my heart to become an educator. At the end of the day, it’s about the kids. There is no greater feeling than witnessing and helping facilitate the transformation a child goes through from the beginning to the end of a school year. It truly takes a village to do that. My work family at MBECS plays a huge role in motivating me to better myself as a teacher and professional. I work in the best school in Horry County with the most amazing staff and colleagues. We pick each other up, motivate each other to do better, and collaborate so well to make our school a place the kids really want to be.
What was your reaction to winning the award?
I was so shocked and honored to receive this award! It has been an extremely tough year navigating new protocols and reinventing the wheel. Us teachers have had a tough time through this pandemic. It feels good to be recognized and seen in a time that has been so trying. I’m truly thankful and humbled for this award, but know it is a reflection of not just me but my wonderful kids and school!
What was the reaction of your class?
My kids were so excited to hear the news of this award. Thank goodness it was towards the end of the day they heard the news they get to visit Rockin Jump, it’s all they cared to talk about!
Have you been to Rockin Jump before? If so, what was your experience like?
I have been to Rockin Jump for several children’s birthday parties. It is a great place for kids and adults of all ages. When you visit, all you can see are smiling faces and hear the booming sound of laughter, which is a fun environment!
What do you find most rewarding about being a teacher?
I find it most rewarding when a former student comes to visit years after being in your class and they have great memories of you and their experience in your room. Teaching kindergarten is such a beloved grade because it is a child’s first experience in school most of the time. Kindergarten sets the tone for kids, and it’s extremely satisfying when a child that young remembers you fondly after so many years pass. It is rewarding to know you made an impact in someone’s life.
Outside of the classroom, what are some of your interests?
Growing up at the beach has made me love to have my toes in the sand as much as possible. I enjoy hunting for sharks teeth and spending time with my beloved family and friends. I also have a crazy cross eyed cat named Obi I love dearly, as well as chickens at the farm I love to tend to.
